August 2025
- Yulan Sheng presented at the European Social Simulation Association Conference on the 25-29th August 2025. Yulan's presentation was titled: Beyond homes: Agent-Based Modelling of Energy Use of Slum dwellers and was co-authored by Yulan Sheng, Sumedha Basu and Frin Bale.
- Sumedha Basu presented at the Royal Geographical Society Conference (RGS) on the 26–29th August 2025 held at the University of Birmingham. Sumedha's seminar was titled "Whose future is it anyway? Diverse imaginaries of urban energy futures and implications for pathways".
July 2025
- Sumedha Basu presented at the University of Tokyo on the 9th July. Her seminar was titled “Narratives from the Heated Margins: Lived Experiences and Cooling Aspirations from the City of Pune, India”. The talk explored the human dimensions of climate vulnerability in informal urban settlements.
- Yulan Sheng attended the 2025 International Conference on China Urban Development held in London on the 7-8th July 2025.
- Sumedha Basu and Frin Bale present an episode of What is The Future for Cities? podcast series exploring "A framework for exploring futures of complex urban energy systems". Shownotes can be found here.
- Sumedha Basu attended the International Public Policy Association's (IPPA) International Conference on Public Policy in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
February 2025
- Sumedha Basu participated at the Fair Energy Futures sandpit which brought interdisciplinary experts together to discuss different aspects of the global transition to a fair energy future. The event was hosted by the Horizons Institute in collaboration with Energy Leeds.
January 2025
- Sumedha Basu presented at the Indian Institute for Human Settlements (IIHS) Annual Research Conference 2025 conference on Urban Transitions in India; Marginalised Futures of Sustainable Cooling in Pune
- Hosted by the Visions of Urban Heat Systems team, the Complexity and Energy Conference 2025 was held in Leeds on the 22nd January 2025. In addition to hosting the event, the team presented the following talks:
- Yulan Sheng: Mapping and modelling for just cooling transitions in Pune
- Sumedha Basu: Future in complexity or complex futures? Co-visioning futures for the sustainable transition of complex urban energy systems

- Yulan Sheng gave a presentation "Mapping and modelling for just cooling transitions" to encourage more research for marginalised communities.
December 2024
- Clean Cool Pune Network's first webinar on Cooling for Climate Action in Pune was held in December 2024. Aarti Nain, Advisor, India Cooling Program, United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) presented the webinar on Pune Climate Action Plan
November 2024
- Sumedha Basu provided support to Members of Parliaments from South Asia in understanding the climate negotiation process during COP29. The South Asian Parliamentarian Forum (SARPF) Steering Committee Delegation to COP29 met with senior leaders and country representatives from a number of countries to discuss regional climate and energy issues.
July 2024
- Launch of the Clean Cool Pune Network. The Clean Cool Pune Network (CCPN) is an innovative city-based coalition bringing together diverse stakeholders to build a sustainable and equitable cooling infrastructure for Pune. With a systemic approach spanning sectors such as urban planning, health, transport, and industry. CCPN serves as a collaborative hub for dialogue, innovation, and policy influence—working to ensure thermal comfort for all, while shaping local and national strategies on climate-resilient cooling. The launch event was held on the 16 July 2024, the event was well attended and the wide-ranging support is a testament to the evolving significance of the issue of cooling in the city of Pune and the commitment of these different stakeholders to mitigate this equitably and sustainably.
- Sumedha Basu gave a guest lecture at the Lady Margaret Hall (LMH) Summer School at the University of Oxford on Climate Change, Environmental Politics and Environmental Justice.
April 2024
- Frin Bale and Sumedha Basu, along with CCPN project partner Dr Namrata Dhamankar, BNCA Pune presented at this Co-production Workshop: Sharing Co-production Research Methodologies
2024
- Yulan Sheng gave a talk entitled "Mapping a sustainable future for the complex urban energy system". The talk given to staff and students within the University of Leeds School of Geography aimed to share recent progress and emphasise the importance role the marginalised community plays in the complex urban system.
- Yulan Sheng gave a talk entitled "Sustainable cooling demands in the complex urban energy system" as part of a conference to share outputs in a heat vulnerability assessment.
- Sumedha Basu organised an external speaker, Dr Parimita Mohanty Programme Management Officer, United Nation Environment Programme (UNEP) who presented her talk "Clean and just energy transition in Asia Pacific region - Opportunities and challenges" at SRI, University of Leeds.
2023
- Sumedha Basu joined a consortium panel on COP 27 and justice. The discussion focused on "What happened at COP27?"
- Sumedha Basu joined colleagues from across the University of Leeds to discuss "From COP27 to COP28: What went well, what went badly and what comes next?". The webinar recording is available.
- Sumedha Basu, along with colleagues from the University of Leeds took part in the Horizons Institute's "Insights Series: exploring ethics in interdisciplinary research".
